Find the subject and verb first
Ask who performs the action and what the action is. In Sara reads books, Sara is the subject, reads is the verb and books is the object. Some sentences need no object: The baby sleeps is complete. Do not add a word just to fill an imagined slot.
- Sara reads books.
- The baby sleeps.
- We study English at school.
Adjectives usually come before nouns
In a useful book, useful comes before book. With be, an adjective can follow the verb: The book is useful. Avoid copying word order directly from your first language. First identify whether the sentence contains an adjective before a noun or a description after be.
- It is a small room.
- The room is small.
Frequency and time expressions
Always, usually and often generally go before the main verb and after be. Say I usually walk and She is always ready. Time phrases such as every morning can appear at the start or end depending on emphasis. Some ordering tasks allow several natural answers; the exercises here specify the pattern being practised.
- I usually drink tea in the morning.
- She is always on time.
Questions change the pattern
For present simple questions, use Do or Does before the subject, followed by the base verb. With be, put the verb before the subject. Check the initial capital letter and final punctuation too. Once the words are arranged, read the whole sentence and check that its meaning is natural.
